INTRODUCTION TO YOUNG LEADERS
Welcome, Young Leader!

You are about to start your journey as a Young Leader. In this first module, we’ll explore what it means to be a leader, why leaders are so important, and the responsibilities you will take on. By the end, you’ll have a clear understanding of your role and feel ready to support others, lead activities, and set a great example.
WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A YOUNG LEADER
Being a Young Leader isn’t about being the boss or telling people what to do. Instead, it’s about setting a good example, being helpful, and making sure everyone feels welcome and included.

A Young Leader is someone who:
-
Encourages others: You help people join in, even if they feel nervous.
-
Listens to everyone’s ideas: You make sure everyone gets a chance to speak.
-
Is kind and fair: You treat everyone with respect, no matter who they are.
-
Supports the team: You help others work together and enjoy the activity.
-
Stays positive: You help keep games fun and friendly.

Even small actions, like inviting someone to play or helping set up equipment, show great leadership. You don’t need to be loud or in charge all the time — quiet leaders can be just as powerful!
During a Young Leaders session, Emma noticed some younger players becoming distracted, so she gently reminded them of the rules and gave them fun challenges.
Answer

WHY YOUNG LEADERS ARE IMPORTANT
Young Leaders play an important role in school. You help make sure everyone feels included, safe, and happy during games and activities. Without leaders, some children might feel left out or unsure of what to do. You help create a positive atmosphere where everyone can enjoy themselves.

You’re like a role model — people watch how you behave and often copy your actions. When you show kindness, patience, and fairness, others will follow your example.
Young Leaders help to:
-
Keep games and activities running smoothly.
-
Support teachers and staff.
-
Solve small problems before they get bigger.
-
Encourage everyone to follow the rules.
-
Help younger students feel safe and involved.

Even on difficult days, your calm and friendly attitude can make a big difference to others.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF A YOUNG LEADER
As a Young Leader, you will have certain responsibilities. These aren’t about being in charge — they’re about making sure everyone can enjoy the activity safely and fairly.
Some of your responsibilities may include:
-
Setting up equipment safely: Make sure everything is ready for the game and that equipment is safe to use.
-
Explaining the rules clearly: Make sure everyone understands how to play and what the rules are.
-
Helping to organise teams: Make sure teams are fair and balanced.
-
Encouraging good behaviour: Remind others to play kindly and fairly.
-
Looking after others: Help younger students feel confident and supported.
-
Asking for help when needed: If something serious happens, always tell a teacher or adult.

Your job is to help create a safe, fun, and fair environment for everyone.
